В настоящее время все утверждения, что сивучи в районах котиковых лежбищ наносят большой вред, пока что нельзя считать бесспорным. Вопрос об искусственном сокращении численности сивучей на Командорских о-вах может быть поставлен только тогда, когда стадо котиков достигнет своей предельной величины и то лишь в том случае, если будет доказано отрицательное влияние сивучей на котиков. В настоящее время рост поголовья сивучей поможет собрать большой и интересный материал о межвидовых взаимоотношениях двух близких видов ластоногих./The article reprots that large harem rookeries of sea lions were formed on the Commander Islands in the old times but by the mid of the last century they were almost completely destroyed. During the last ten years the number of sea lions on the Commander Islands began to increase again. At present young male sea lions are mainly represented here. Old males are not numerous and female sea lions are quite rarely occurred. On Medny Island sea lions occupy the south - east edge of it, i.e. the region of main fur seal rookeries. In spring they are distributed on fur seal harem rookeries; leave them in the period of breeding and are back only at the beginning of August. Fur seal pups are rather big at that time and the danger of their mass crushing by sea lions is small. In the harem period of fur seal life sea lions are mainly distributed on separate stones close to the coast and only parts of sea lions can be met together with bachelors. В основу настоящей работы положены личные наблюдения автора и опросные данные, полученные от жителей Командорских островов. По нашим наблюдениям, численность животных в течение года заметно изменяется. Так, например, общее количество сивучей на обоих островах с июня по октябрь достигает 2500-3500 голов, а с ноября по май - не менее 4000. Резкое увеличение количества сивучей в зимний период происходит за счет привала полусекачей и секачей, которые, по нашему мнению, летом уходят на места размножения (на гаремные лежбища), расположенные на восточном побережье Камчатки и на Курильских о-вах. Регулярные наблюдения за сивучами, обитающими на юго-восточной оконечности о-ва Медного, проводились нами в июне в течение трех лет (1959, 1960 и 1962)./The number of sea lions on the Commander Islands decreased greatly in the 19th century. Therefore the kill of sea lions in the beginning of the 20th century was very small. During the last ten years the number of sea lions began to increase again and sometimes it reaches 4000. Young bechelors are mainly occurred here in summer. Adult and subadult bulls prevail here in winter. There are no harem rookeries on the Commander Islands. As female sea lions, are very rarely met here, delivery were rarely registered. Ling cods, cods and cephalopod molluscs are food items of sea lions. Hostile behaviour of sea lions to fur seals was not observed. Young sea lions are often observed playing with young fur seals. В настоящее время на о-ве Тюленьем есть необходимые предпосылки для дальнейшего развития котикового промысла. В настоящей работе рассматривается следующий комплекс вопросов: время, место и способ убоя зверя; характер смерти животного при забое; порядок съемки шкуры, ее обрядка, обезжиривание, консервирование, упаковка и хранение, порядок сбора побочного сырья. Материалы о котиковом промысле собраны нами на о-ве Тюленьем Сахалинской области с 1958 по 1961 г. включительно./The article deals with questions of kill techniques, sorting and primary treatment of fur seals on Robben Island. It is recommended to kill fur seals by means of drive from a hauling ground on the south cape of the Island at dawn on a dull of foggy day. The following order of kill is used on Robben Island. Fur seals driven out of the hauling ground are locked in the corral, where they are not troubled during 20-30 minutes to get quiet and lose their temper. About 15 animals are driven out of the corral to the killing ground, where the kill of bachelors is carried on. Bachelors are stunned by a strike of astick against the nose or back of the head and then finally stubbed into the heart with a dagger.
